With around 1’100-1’400 attendees every year, the European Accounting Association’s (EAA) Annual Congress is one of the major events for academics in management, auditing and accounting.. This year’s congress took place in Maastricht, Netherlands, from May 11-13 and IMA was one of three Gold Sponsors for the event.
“IMA has been active in the Netherlands for over 25 years now with two strong academic partners locally, VU Amsterdam and RSM Erasmus University. That was a key factor on why we decided to be Gold Sponsor at this year’s EAA Congress.”, Nina Michels-Kim, Director IMA European Operations, explained. “The gold sponsorship gave IMA a lot of visibility with a prime location for our booth and the ability to provide various marketing material tailored for Educators.”

The booth was an instant conversation-starter and IMA was able to attract the attention of about 10% of the over 1’050 attendees. Visitors to the IMA booth could have their photo taken and/or participate in a raffle to receive teaching notes to the IMA student case study (normally a benefit reserved exclusively for IMA academic members), and, in addition, the winner received a voucher for Rokker motorcycle clothes (a vintage motorcycle outfitter based in St. Gallen, Switzerland) worth EUR 200.-. The winner of the raffle was Prof. Dr. Peter Kajüter, professor of business administration at the University of Münster, Germany. Congratulations!

Apart from having a booth and providing marketing material, Gold Sponsors were also given the opportunity to organize a symposium on a specific topic. IMA’s symposium “Partnering between research & professional education institutions” featured Prof. Dr. Klaus Möller, Director Institute of Accounting, Control and Auditing, University of St. Gallen and IMA’s Honorary Professor in management accounting, as chair.
Mr. Möller led a panel including Dr. Raef Lawson, Vice President Research & Policy, IMA, plus three other IMA partners from different universities, Business Schools and professional education institutions: Prof. Dr. Hélène Löning, Associate Professor, Accounting and Management Control, HEC School of Management, Paris; Prof. Dr. Tom Groot, Head of the Department of Accounting, VU University, Amsterdam; Dr. Paolo Perego, Associate Professor in Management Accounting and Control, RSM Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

In their presentations, the speakers provided case studies on how it makes sense from the perspective of a researcher or a research driven organization to partner with professional education institutions.
Judging from the interactive nature of the symposium with a lot of questions from the audience, there was a lot of interest in the topic. For anyone who missed the symposium but would like to receive the 90 minute video recording, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
